OUR PHILOSOPHY

Our philosophy is based on the notion that specialized homes, when appropriate, provide an ideal setting for a regular institution setting. The core belief is that each specialized home environment increases the ability of individuals to work toward ‘normalization.’ This format of staff-supported living will enable the individual to live as independently as possible with an appropriate support system in place on a one-to-one basis.

At Therapeutic Community Care, we also believe:

  • Wherever possible, individuals grow and develop best in supportive environments.
  • Treatment is most effective when it is tailored to the needs of individuals and their families. Respect for cultural diversity is foremost in our treatment process;
  • The individual’s family, wherever possible and appropriate, will remain in their decision-making roles as educator, nurturer, and caregiver. TCC will work with family members to support them in a beneficial role within their family structure.
  • Treatment is far more successful and effective when it addresses the individual’s priorities, when it is goal oriented and involves the family as a partner in the planning the decision-making, and when it empowers the indisucceed to success for both the individuals and their families
what is

THE PROCESS

  • It is imperative that both the individual and their family feel accepted as part of the resolution process to simultaneously affect change. The individuals in our care are our most valued assets, positive and healthy person contributes to the success of their family, community and their future. Each individual will have input on resources. They are entitled to mature and develop in an environment that is healthy, safe and nurturing. The goal in part can be realized through the adoption of multidisciplinary client central and cultural appropriate services.
  • Individuals with special needs are particularly vulnerable for several reasons. They must rely on other people for support of one kind of another. They may have difficulties communicating with others or gaining access to certain programs and services. Throughout their lives system may not have taken sufficient account of their special needs. This systemically resulted in restricted access to systems by people in this vulnerable sector of society.
  • The lives of individuals in our home care can be profoundly damaged by negative and abusive environments. They can become frightened and confused. They may receive verbal and physical or emotional abuse… they may also be perpetrators of abuse and violence towards others. Some may develop increased emotional and behavioural problems; lose trust in other people; experience a major decrease in their schoolwork; get into trouble with the law, become withdrawn and passive, or disobedient, destructive and aggressive.
